Historical Societies


A private, not-for-profit museum and school house founded in 1963 to preserve, promote and share knowledge about the town of East Hampton’s extraordinarily rich but not always evident history.

Promotes an interest in the history of Chester as a town that has survived and thrived by adapting throughout its four-century evolution as a settled community.

Preserves Clinton’s history in a collection of museums including a historic house museum — the 1750 Elisha White House known as “Old Brick.” Maintains the George Flynn Library, the Buell Tool Museum, historic gardens, and the Museum Room in Clinton’s Town Hall.

Collects, preserves, and communicates the rich history of the Town of Deep River to the public through exhibits, programs, research collections, and publications.

Illuminates and preserves the stories of the people and places that shape the East Haddam community.

Promotes awareness and understanding of the people, places, and events that have shaped the history of Essex. It serves the three villages of Essex— Essex, Centerbrook, and Ivoryton.

Collects, preserves, and shares the history and heritage of Guilford for present and future generations.

Collects, interprets and promotes the history and heritage of Haddam for present and future generations by offering programs, events, exhibits, research and tours to encourage broad public engagement and instill a pride of place. Owns and operates the Thankful Arnold House Museum and the Haddam Shad Museum.

Preserves and protects properties and artifacts, and provides programs for the community, including activities at Parmalee Farm.

Genealogy

Founded in 1968, the Connecticut Society of Genealogists is one of the oldest genealogy societies in Connecticut.

Serving genealogists and family historians since 1947. Open to members and the general public.

Museums

The Connecticut River Museum at Steamboat Dock in Essex is dedicated to deepening appreciation of the River’s history and to inspire its stewardship by providing unique educational and recreational experiences to diverse audiences.

The state’s official historical society and one of the oldest in the nation. Located in Hartford, the CMCH houses a museum, library, and the Edgar F. Waterman Research Center that are open to the public.

The Katharine Hepburn Museum is the only museum of its kind dedicated to the famed actress and Old Saybrook resident. It offers an authentic view of the cultural and historical impact of Miss Hepburn and her family through letters, photos, home movies, costumes, personal wardrobe items, and other memorabilia.
