Changes Over Time
In the years after World War II, a new generation began to take to the water, this time in recreational boats. Westbrook’s coastline offered good locations for docks and later for marinas offering expanded services for yachtsmen. The need for boat repairs, seasonal storage and access to Long Island Sound made former shipbuilding sites good places to offer these traditional services to the growing boat-owning public.
Like all communities, Westbrook continues to adapt to the social and economic changes that define American life. Residents enjoy their special location between the rivers and the sea and they welcome summer visitors who appreciate these shared treasurers. Wooded neighborhoods, winding rural roads and beach associations help protect Westbrook’s regional character and the Westbrook Historical Society records the changes over time.
